Living in Northwest Iowa, it can sometimes feel impossible to find that dreamy, Pinterest-worthy location. But trust me, they are out there! Over the years, I’ve explored so many hidden gems, and I love helping my clients discover just how beautiful this corner of Iowa can be.
Here are a few of my favorite spots for sessions — places that bring out the natural beauty of the Midwest and create the perfect backdrop for your story.
Sandy Hollow – Sioux Center, IA
This spot is a classic for a reason. Sandy Hollow offers a little bit of everything: a beach-like area with soft sand, clusters of trees that frame your photos beautifully, and my personal favorite — the prairie tucked toward the back. Whether you’re dreaming of a summery, light-filled session or something more earthy and golden, Sandy Hollow never disappoints.

Dordt Prairie – Sioux Center, IA
If wildflowers and evergreens are your thing, Dordt Prairie is the place to go. In the spring and summer, the fields come alive with pops of color, while autumn transforms it into a scene of warm tones and textured beauty. It’s one of those spots that feels like it was made for both vibrant, joyful sessions and moody, editorial vibes.

Oak Grove – Hawarden, IA
Oak Grove is such a versatile location! You’ll find rolling hills, tall fields of grass, tree-lined roads, and plenty of open sky. I especially love it during golden hour — the way the light streams through the trees is just magical. Every time I shoot here, I find something new to fall in love with.

Heritage Village: Sioux Center, IA
This is one of the top ones for something unique and fun! It has fun homes, brick paths, flowers, and my favorite is the fun, bright red gas pumps!

Plain Grass Fields/Dirt Roads – Anywhere in the Countryside
Driving through the Iowa countryside, you’ll see endless fields that seem to stretch forever. I love pulling over at those “random” spots where the grass meets the big, open sky. There’s something about the simplicity of it that makes the photos so powerful. Sometimes less really is more.
It may sound simple, but dirt roads are one of my favorite hidden gems. They capture the quiet, simple beauty of Northwest Iowa — wide skies, endless horizons, and a backdrop that feels both timeless and authentic. Sometimes the most ordinary roads create the most extraordinary photos.

Your Own Home
Yes, you read that right — your home might just be the best location of all! Backyards, front porches, and favorite corners of your property can create some of the most meaningful images because they hold your memories. Years from now, you’ll love looking back on photos taken in the place where your life really happened.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the best location is wherever your vision and story come to life. From beaches and prairies to dirt roads and backyards, Northwest Iowa has so much beauty to offer — sometimes in the most unexpected places. If you have a spot in mind, let’s go there! Together, we can turn it into the perfect backdrop for timeless, joy-filled photos.
